Spiritual Physics: Quantum admits to the power of consciousness

“The principle of selection that chooses reality is not fitness, as in natural selection of species during evolution, but consistency.
The reality that becomes concrete has to be consistent with all the previous realities selected from the quantum fog;
that is, reality must be consistent with all the information about the past that is recorded in the environment.”

The Bit and The Pendulum by Tom Siegfried, pg. 183

In this first issue of my SPIRITUAL PHYSICS articles I would like to introduce the idea that the discoveries of modern physics support many profound spiritual truths found in well-respected scriptures. Ideas that were previously confined to the realm of “religion,” “spirituality,” “esoterics,” etc. are now being echoed by the postulations within recognized and academically respected science. This is a great boon for us as a species and for individual spiritual seekers who have struggled, at times, to negotiate these two pulls.

For many years, spiritual seekers who still have one foot in the conventional modern world have suffered with a description of the world coming from their teachers and the spiritual texts of their teachers that clashed with the publicly respected academics of the science world.

Today, certainly, very few “scientists” recognize the possibility that their latest discoveries are intensely spiritual in nature despite they’re being so. And so, spiritual seekers should not expect science to start endorsing spiritual practices and exercises any time soon. But you never know. The fact is that “science” itself does support such activities more today than ever before in the modern western world.

A lot of what I will be writing about is how modern science, particularly within the field of quantum physics, is starting to recognize the presence, power and importance of “consciousness” within material reality. Classical models of the “ghost in the machine” analogy to describe the separation between “spirit” and matter are falling apart under the astonishing discoveries within these fields. And the scientists themselves are feeling dizzy under the implications they are uncovering.

As spiritual seekers, of course, we know, because we have been taught by the greatest spiritual masters and their recorded teachings, that scientists will never succeed in unlocking the mysteries of the universe by looking exclusively outside of themselves. But the exciting thing is that modern science is painting itself into this corner; that is, it is imaginable that one day soon a modern physicist may actually come to this conclusion through the power of mathematical theory alone! Even the possibility that this may happen is an proof that love and compassion truly does rule the universe; that is, if the misguided efforts of scientists, founded in conquering and controlling and motivated by fear, are leading inexorably back to themselves, back to their own consciousness, back to their own socially-constructed belief systems, back (eventually) to recognize the supremacy of meditation in all fields of life then there is hope even for them. God truly loves everyone equally if God can lead even an ignorant investigation back to the path of truth!

So this is partly why I am so happy over the latest discoveries in the world of science; because through it, swords are miraculously turning into doves. The aggressive and violent orientation of science in our modern world (the fact that science is paid for by the motivation to conquer, prove supremacy of individual man, overcome all obstacles including death itself and eventually storm the heavens by spreading our race to other planets) is actually fueling discoveries that can defeat that original violent frame of mind. The latest in science supports surrender, love, compassion, humility and, most importantly, renunciation, more than ever. And that is what I hope to show through these writings as much as I (a “layman,” as it were, in these fields) can.

So, enough of the intro., let’s look again at this quote from Tom Siegfried’s book, “The Bit and the Pendulum.”

“The principle of selection that chooses reality is not fitness, as in natural selection of species during evolution, but consistency.
The reality that becomes concrete has to be consistent with all the previous realities selected from the quantum fog;
that is, reality must be consistent with all the information about the past that is recorded in the environment.”

Mr. Siegfried is talking about the classical Darwinian model of evolution, of how species evolve, about how things change and have changed on this planet. He is throwing out the idea of some type of “progress” based on superiority and inserting instead this idea of “consistency.” One is very materialistic and the other takes into account consciousness in a way that hasn’t happened before.

Darwin’s theory of revolution gave the necessary gas to fuel the modern western efforts to conquer all its obstacles: to cut down trees, to experiment on animals, to eat whatever we wanted, to remake this planet in whatever way we saw fit. Why? Because life is ruled by the strong, the superior. Those of greatest “fitness” survive and all else falls away as unnecessary life forms on the road of EVOLUTION. Even the word, evolution, sounds like it came out of a Charles Heston movie. We are great, we will be greater and we will prevail because God supports and encourages the strong over the weak, etc.

Now here comes quantum physicists saying, “Ah, well, actually, it’s doesn’t appear to work that way when we look really closely at it all.” Physicists introduced this idea of “consistency” rather than superiority as the reason why some species survive, why some things happen and others don’t. Consistency means symmetry; that is, consistency asks the question, “what has come before,” “what has happened already” in order to determine what will happen next. What matches the trends of yesterday ends up influencing the changes we see today. This sounds simple and even self-evident but it is not because it is a radical departure from Darwinian evolution. What happens today is not entirely based on what is superior or even strong, it is based just as much on what happened yesterday.

Consistency supports other theories like “patterning” and “information” that were previously not admitted to the very material world of science. The radical nature of these new discoveries, from the perspective of spiritual seekers, is that they let “consciousness” into the room. These discoveries are acknowledging that perspective, perception, awareness has not only an influence on “reality” but even has some power in defining that reality. I will be going further into this issue in future posts.

reality must be consistent with all the information about the past that is recorded in the environment.”

Spiritual seekers start jumping up and down when they hear scientists make these kinds of statements. Why? Because they know that once scientists start talking about “information” that is “recorded” they will have to ask, sooner or later, “where” is this information kept? How is “information” stored, referenced, by the bodies of matter upon whose changes it depends? And then they will have to contend with consciousness. If even one of them starts meditating because of these discoveries it will be a great victory for the world.

I will have to save my thoughts on “the quantum fog” for another time. That’s where the connection to Maya happens.
